Hello, Gem.

How’s your heart? I pray it’s thriving. Let me tell you what’s been on mine.

To the Friends Who Became Family x K.M.

Dear Best Friend, my chosen family,

Life has a unique, or shall I say funny (not so funny) way of persistently reshuffling our deck with new jobs, new cities, seasons of loss and laughter, and the list goes on and on. And on and on…

But through all the changes, one thing has remained consistent and thorough… and that’s you. You are more than my best friend; you are my chosen family.

We didn't sign papers or share bloodlines, and that makes our bond that much greater. We chose each other, again and again—in the quiet moments, whether awkward or comfortable, the messy situations, hardships, and even during the times that demanded more grace than either of us knew we had.

Friendship, at first, feels simple and fun: late-night talks, inside jokes, and endless texts. As years stack up, something deeper inevitably forms. Studies show that friendships lasting over seven years are likely to be lifelong (Psychology Today, 2018). And I believe it, Bestie, because somehow, without ceremony or spotlight, we became an unbreakable team.

We’ve survived heartbreaks, disappointments, and victories too big to fit into a single phone call. We’ve been each other’s witness when life didn’t go according to plan… and when it miraculously did. Through you, I learned there’s healing power in finding your person. There’s real science behind why having a best friend feels like breathing easier.

Research from the Mayo Clinic shows that strong friendships can boost happiness, lower stress, and even lengthen your lifespan. But no study could ever measure how you made many hard days softer. Or how a simple yet powerful, ‘I'm here’ text could lessen the anxiety clawing at my chest. Or how your voice on the other end of the phone felt like home when nothing else did.

You remain a real one, Friend!

With you, I learned that being loved isn't about being perfect. It's about being seen for who you are while still being accepted and chosen. You taught me how important forgiveness is, and how celebration is even sweeter when your person knows the valleys you crossed to get there. Real friendship isn't passive, but a decision to be present, over and over.

I'm grateful that our friendship isn’t polished for social media. It’s real, unfiltered, messy, and beautiful. It’s showing up even when there’s nothing in it for you but the privilege of being there.

So here's my promise, tucked into this love letter: As life continues to shift and surprise us, I will keep choosing you. And I hope we keep choosing each other, friend. I will keep making room for you and never stop rooting for you, out loud or in prayer.

Thank you for being my home, my mirror, and my forever safe place. Never forget that you’re my chosen family, and loving you is one of the easiest choices I’ll ever make.

I love you infinitely, Friend.

Gem, send this to your best friend and remind them they are valued and appreciated.

Until next time, I’m sending you lots of love. - K.M.
