4|28|26Hey, Gem. Zhara here, and I’m back with another one.
Let’s jump into it
Intention Over Attention x Zhara. J.
★
Gem, you know that warm feeling that sometimes arrives quickly… too quickly… during a new connection? It pulls you in with intensity that feels like desire and possibility… like something worth leaning toward. And still, your spirit asks questions.
Because attention feels good.
It nourishes a part of us that longs to be seen. It speaks to our need for connection, validation, and closeness. As humans, we are wired for this. Psychologists describe attention as a powerful social reward, activating the same neural pathways associated with pleasure and reinforcement. It makes sense that we respond to it deeply (Falk & Bassett, 2017).
Yet, attention alone has a specific lightness, arriving in bursts and often centering on moments. It highlights how someone feels in your presence and creates sparks, building anticipation and showing up in compliments, late-night messages, and nurturing gazes.
Whew, gem. Don’t get me started.
It can feel like everything. But we must pay attention to what’s real, not just what feels good.
Real love moves with a different kind of energy, showing up with a presence that extends beyond moments and into healthy patterns. Genuine interest reveals itself through consistency, effort, and thorough care, even when the moment loses its shine. Love pays attention to who you are, not only how you make someone feel. Period.
According to attachment research by Sue Johnson, secure emotional bonds are built through responsiveness, accessibility, and engagement. These qualities shape relationships where people feel safe, valued, and understood. That kind of connection builds and deepens. It cannot be mistaken.
You can feel the difference in your body.
Attention excites and creates butterflies, quick smiles, and a sense of being chosen in the moment. It often centers on chemistry and attraction, leaning into desire and curiosity. Love, on the other hand, brings a sense of ease and being held in a way that does not require constant proving. It creates emotional safety and invites you to exhale.
Love speaks clearly.
Genuine interest listens and remembers. It follows through, asks about your day, and holds space for the answer. It honors your boundaries, respects your time, and makes room for your growth.
Are you following me, Gem? I want to make sure you understand the differences.
Research on relationship satisfaction highlights that consistent emotional responsiveness and mutual investment shape long-term connection and well-being (Reis, Clark, & Holmes, 2004). That kind of presence builds trust over time and forms something lasting.
Now, let’s focus on love before I wrap this up.
Love is intentional and moves with purpose. It considers the future and creates space for alignment, shared values, and building something meaningful together.
You deserve more than moments that feel good: a connection that feels nourishing and sees you fully. True love chooses you with clarity and shows up with care that remains, even when life asks for patience, understanding, and depth. It’s deep, Gem. Nothing surface-level about it.
As Bell Hooks writes in All About Love, love is an action; a combination of care, commitment, knowledge, responsibility, respect, and trust (hooks, 2000). These elements create a love that feels whole and nurtures a love that grows.
So when you find yourself wondering, listen closely and pay deeper attention. Trust yourself!
Your heart knows the difference; it always has.
Gem, share this with a woman who has been holding questions in her heart while hoping consistency would answer them. Pay attention to what feels real and consistent.
Until next time, may you welcome love that feels intentional, nourishing, and safe enough for your spirit to rest in. Thank you for rocking with us at SheIsTreasure. – Zhara. J.
